Hunger Games Catching Fire Cast's favourite YA novels

Catching-Fire-London-premiere.jpg

EW readers are in the midst of a bitter battle to crown the greatest YA book of all time. So who better to influence your opinions than the cast of one of the most popular young adult series of the moment — The Hunger Games.

Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss):
“Harry Potter. I was so crazy about Harry Potter I read it twice. All of them twice. I didn’t have a favorite, I thought they were all amazing.”At the London premiere for the upcoming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (in theaters Nov. 22), Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and more opened up about their favorite YA series.
Josh Hutcherson (Peeta): ”I kind of, unfortunately, stuck to what the school made me read. I didn’t get to step out of that zone. I had the opportunity but I just didn’t take advantage of it. But my favorite book growing up was probably Catcher in the Rye. I loved that; it’s a great book.”
Elizabeth Banks (Effie): ”It depends on my age. I guess for the same age as these guys, I was a big fan of the Flowers in the Attic series. I was not really allowed to read those, but I snuck them anyway. I love those books.”
Sam Claflin (Finnick): “Mate, I don’t read. That’s why I got into acting, so I wouldn’t have to read books. I basically played a lot of football growing up — or soccer, whatever you want to call it. Basically, any class at high school that I didn’t have to read or write [in], I got involved. So no, absolutely not, no favorite book or book series…My wife will tell you that I do not read. I literally read Lord of the Flies about a year ago, I’m not kidding. I think this is the third project that I’ve been involved that’s based on a book and, until this franchise, I hadn’t read a single one. But then I did read all three of these in five days.”
Jeffrey Wright (Beetee): ”I was a big fan of The Hardy Boys when I was in elementary school, primary school. So they were probably my favorite series…it’s really pretty cool that we’re part of this franchise that encourages kids to read, much like the Harry Potter series. It also encourages them to take into consideration some of the challenges that we face, contemporarily in society, issues of classism and war and all of those things that as the world gets more and more kind of daft in its interests, you know, that we can encourage younger audiences and younger minds through a popcorn movie to focus on and ask questions about these things. I think it’s a really healthy thing.”
Willow Shields (Prim): “I like any book by John Green. He’s my favorite author ever. He’s amazing. I love him. But right now, I’m reading the last Divergent book [by Veronica Roth], which is really exciting. I’m kind of nervous. I love those books, too.”
Francis Lawrence, director: “I’m not sure about book series. I remember loving — although I guess it might have been when I was a little younger — all the Roald Dahl books. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, The Fantastic Mr. Fox. I remember those were the big books for me when I was a kid.”
Jon Kilik, producer: “The things that I think kids like about this are what I liked about Brave New World and Lord of the Flies and 1984. Those were the books I grew up with and that’s what I immediately connected with when I read [The Hunger Games]. I thought this could be that for kids today.”
Nina Jacobson, producer: “I was a huge fan of the Narnia series. I loved them and had the good fortune to get to make those when I was at Disney. I couldn’t get enough of those books when I was a kid.”

Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence talks to MTV

MTV interviewed Francis Lawrence on Catching Fire:

On whether there are major changes from the book:
"No, not really, I would say that it’s a really faithful adaptation. You know, whenever you're adapting something that’s a 12- or 14-hour read down to something that has to be around two hours, there’s going to be some cuts. We definitely made some cuts. I don’t want to go into that, but we did it with Suzanne, and I would say that it’s very, very faithful. We tried to get as much as we could in there."

On the scenes he's most proud of:
"It's interesting because there’s a very small blur—I want to say it's a paragraph long in the book—but the moment in the arena when the gamemaker starts to spin the cornucopia, and I’m very proud of that. We designed a very cool sequence and created a spinning island, and that’s going to be very, very cool. So that’s kind of fun and very unique. I’ve never seen anything like it. It's cool.

"You know one of the very first things we shot that I like quite a lot is, there is sort of a goodbye before she goes into the arena with Liam that I like a lot. And it was actually—we shot it because we needed summer foliage and summer flowers and things like that. We actually shot it while we were in prep. Very first thing we sort of went out into the meadow, out in the mountains in north Georgia and shot this sequence over three or four hours or so, and I really like it. I think it’s really nice. Jennifer and Liam are really good in it. It’s very nice."

On whether those IMAX rumors are true:
"Yeah, the idea is that it’s sort of mixed formats. But yeah, that’s the idea is that the arena is in the IMAX format so that once you go in the elevator and it opens up."

On whether his actors' jovial natures ever lead to disruptions:
"You know what? I believe that the process could be fun, I just think that making movies is really tough. And it’s stressful as it is, and I think that most of us got in this business because it’s fun to make movies. I think it should stay fun. And it’s a really fun group and a very talented group. I would say only occasionally, maybe once or twice, did it get a little rowdy on set. We had to sort of clear everybody out because it is a little distracting. Or you just nicely say, 'Hey guys, why don’t we take this off the set and go somewhere else?' And I will say you go with that combo of Jen and Josh and Woody together and it can be mayhem."

On "Mockingjay":
"Nina, John, Suzanne and I have gone through the book and created the beat sheets for it. And started going through all that and at least marking our initial ideas of what the moments would be and how it all breaks down. And Danny Strong, who’s writing the first one, is working now. So yeah, we’ve actually done a fair amount of work. We're starting to think about where we could shoot it and all of that."

Salary Hike for Hunger Games Trio

THR says:
Jennifer Lawrence, whose performance as Katniss Everdeen helped The Hunger Games gross $683.8 million worldwide this spring, is getting a major raise for the sequel.

The actress is in the final stages of negotiating a rich deal to return for Catching Fire that will pay her somewhere in the $10 million range, according to sources close to the deal. The figure is a combination of salary, bonuses and escalators. Depending on the box-office performance of the film, she could earn much more.

The Hollywood Reporter reported in February that the Oscar-nominated actress was paid just $500,000 upfront for the first film, plus bonuses depending on box-office performance. Her original deal with studio Lionsgate locked her into four planned films based on the best-selling Suzanne Collins trilogy, but producers -- recognizing the success of the franchise -- moved to renegotiate her contract as the film became an international sensation. Such renegotiations are common on major film franchises. The Twilight stars, for instance, received significant salary bumps in subsequent movies.

Lawrence’s co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth also are said to have renegotiated their contracts, but each will receive far smaller raises, according to sources. Lawrence, whose gritty performance was central to the film, is seen as the marquee star.

Josh Hutcherson talks about Catching Fire, Liam Hemsworth's wedding and more...

Josh Hutcherson called into Ryan Seacrest:

Will Josh Be Attending Miley & Liam’s Wedding? “I’m definitely going to go. I’m for sure gonna go. Liam’s my boy! I’m definitely going to be there to support him. I haven’t been invited, so I have to get the invite first to know if I’m going. I’ve got to make sure I’m invited. I say I’m going, but I don’t know, maybe Liam has other plans for that.” “I know when I talked to him that they hadn’t had any plans. This was like a couple months ago when they first had made an announcement, but I don’t know what the plans are. I know he’s in Philly, I think he was in New Orleans for a while too, he’s been bouncing around. It’s tough when you’re in a relationship and you’re on set. I’m not in one right now because of that. Because I’m about ready to go away for like four months and it’s very challenging to keep your mind focused…” “I’ve been training for about the last month or so now and I head out in about two weeks to go down to Atlanta to start shooting. It’s not quite intense as the first round that I did last year, but it’s just basically getting in good shape. We’re pretty much wearing these body suits the entire time, so one would like be in good shape to wear a spandex neoprene body suit for an entire movie.” On Kissing Jennifer Lawrence: “Actually it’s funny because we’re such good friends that in those moments where it has to be romantic it’s sometimes challenging because we have such a good time with what we do that we have to be serious and really buckle down.”

Hunger Games: Catching Fire Casting News...

Lot's of rumours about who will play who in the upcoming Catching Fire which is set to start filming "soon" (I believe middle July - not sure)

EW reports:

Alice will not be entering the arena.

Contrary to a report last week, Mia Wasikowska is not vying for the role of headstrong tribute Johanna Mason in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. According to the Alice in Wonderland star’s reps, Wasikowska has neither been approached for the role, nor would be able to play it given other film commitments she has for 2012.

Model/actress Zoe Aggeliki was also mentioned as a potential candidate for the role, but Lionsgate has not yet responded to a request for confirmation.

Also at last night's Magic Mike premiere, former WWF/WWe wrestler Kevin Nash (remember his as Diesel in wrestling? I sure do!) said he may be cast in Catching Fire as well..... “I just pray it’s recurring, that he doesn’t get killed,”

Meanwhile Lil' Romeo aka Romeo Miller has allegedly met with casting directors for consideration for a role in Cathing Fire. Which character? We don't know... Watch this interview with MTV...

Here’s the transcript from MTV:

But for his next roles, Miller has his sights set on an acting career similar to Will Smith. “I want to be the next big action hero or I want to do a lot of romantic type movies, romantic comedies, a little bit of everything, but definitely the next action hero,” Miller said, and then added, “You can see me in ‘The Hunger Games’ or something like that. Just throwing that out there.”

Though he admitted to not being very familiar with Suzanne Collins’ books, Miller confirmed that there has been some discussion about possibly joining “Catching Fire,” which is currently casting.

“I actually just met with Lionsgate about that, so you may be seeing me in one of the ‘Hunger Games.’ That’s all I’m saying,” Miller said. “Not a particular role, we just had a meeting, seeing if it was something I was interested in. I can’t really talk too much, or they’ll kill you. You know how ‘The Hunger Games’ is.”

So many rumours, can't wait for some official announcements!

Interview with Liam Hemsworth & Elizabeth Banks - Hey U Guys

Part 1

Part 2

Highlights:

What are you looking forward to in the sequels? LH: There’s some pretty crazy stuff in the third book! EB: I can’t even imagine the bunker they live in! LH: The third book is wild and crazy, so for that to be a movie will be extreme. EB Intense. LH: That’s when the whole uprising is, so if we get to shoot that… Are you filming the sequels back to back? EB: The rumour is that it’s one movie at a time. LH: We haven’t shot anything else yet. EB: No one’s even read it. There’s now a tradition for the final book of a franchise to be split into two movies – have you been contracted for three or four pictures? EB: Can we confirm or deny that? [At this point there is a pause for a moment, as both Banks and Hemsworth look to the publicist, sat in the corner of the room.] I don’t believe we can confirm nor deny that! I can confirm there are three books! I don’t know how many movies.

Hunger Games Review - SPOILERS

I was lucky enough to get to see The Hunger Games World Premiere on Monday March 12, 2012 in L.A. at the Nokia Theatre. After an overnight in the fan-camp "The Hob" meeting many of the cast and then front row of the black carpet, I was so excited to see the film.

WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD

More... It opens with Caesar & Seneca talking about the games. I was shocked it opened this way, but it quickly went back and told us the story of Katniss.

They quickly established the strong relationship between Primrose and Katniss as Primrose has a bad dream and is comforted by Katniss' lullabye. If you hadn't read the books the significance of this lullabye, along with a hissing cat greeting Katniss afterwards would be lost.

Katniss goes out into the forest through the gate and sees a deer. Gale interupts her hunting and there is some friendly flirtatious banter. They discuss the reaping and their future. He says they can escape and runaway.

Back home they prepare for the reaping as Prim and Katniss get dressed up and prettied.

There is nothing on their dad or the story there, but they do show a photo of him on the mantle. I think you need to have read the book to understand the implications of these types of minor additions to the film.

In the good-bye Katniss gives a firm talk to her mother on being strong, again from the books we know what happened with their mother and Katniss says she simply can not check-out again, Prim needs her.

It is very moving and yet another bawl fest comes on when she says her good-bye to Prim. This is the scene Jennifer Lawrence used for her audition and got her the role. It has been quite public how she brought Gary Ross to tears, understandably so.

The training is awesome. We see Peeta paint his arm in camo and after the other tributes pick on him Katniss gives him a pep talk on how he can throw bags of flour over his shoulder and to stand up to them - and so he does.

Katniss' scene when she is being tested is awesome. After missing her first arrow, the capitol reps and sponsors lose interest and she grabs their attention well shooting the arrow into the apple in the pigs mouth, leading to the highest rating.

The interviews are awesome, as are the outfits. I wish they had included more from each tributes interview. Peeta proves to be very charasmastic and a bit mysterious. They frequently flash to the "bread scene" throughout the movie, slowly revealing a bit more. In his interview he talks about Katniss' as we have seen in the clip all over the internet.

Cinna was not as extravagant as I hoped. He did have faint gold eyeliner but I really expected a bit more. His relationship with Katniss was established quickly and seemed genuine and tender. Her dress in the arena to the interview is awesome - we have seen photos of the coal black outfits that light on fire. The interview dress, however, was less like the book. It did have jewels on her shoulder then a red dress and the bottom then lights on fire as she spins. Still beautiful and keeps the focus on the "girl on fire"

Once the actual games start things get intense. the cornacopia is nothing like I imagined, more of a metal structure shaped as the horn than perhaps what I envisioned. It worked.

Sadly, some of the lovely tribute children played by cute actotrs and actresses I had just meton the carpet were killed instantly.

It is not as graphic as I expected, it has mostly off-screen violence and implied deaths, though I can tolerate a lot of violence so my interpretation may not be accurate. The most "graphic" scene to me was when the tracker-jackers sting Clove and they show her stung dead body and face.

But that is later, first we get the run to the cornacopia, the run away, the battles, the deaths then the journey.

It seemed to go too fast for me at times and too slow at times. I kept wanting to see certain things and felt anxious waiting and hoping they were included.

I can't recall sequential order at this time but here are some points I recall and wanting to discuss.

The scene when Rue points out the tracker jacker hive near Katniss and she is cutting the branch to send it down tot he tribute alliance waiting at the bottom of the tree.... the branch is SO thick - even though I know the outcome, I am sitting there wondering how on earth she will ever get through that branch.

The flower tribute to Rue was done well, I was worried it wouldn't be but I was satisfied, though ugly-crying the whole time - in fact from when they started to bond I started to bawl, just knowing what was to come.

Also, they show Rue's district do the three finger salute to the screen when Katniss' does the flowers for Rue and then they show the riot start which foreshadows what is to come in future movies.

The cave scene was really well done, it was funny how you were waiting for Peeta and Katniss kiss then they did and everyone cheered, then they showed Gale and everyone went "awn"

They built the triangle/conflict well in the movie. I was worried it wouldn't translate since so much of the book, including the cave, was Katniss' internal thoughts on Peeta and Gale and the differences and how she felt.... but in the movie they couldn't possible show that, instead they did subtly flashes back home to people watching the Hunger Games and flashes of Gale's concern over Peeta and Katniss.

The mutts at the end were vicious but there was no indication they were past contestents, or their eyes, or had anything to do with them, which was disappointing snce that was one of the more disturbing parts of the novel.

The end interview with Peeta and Katniss was good, you could see a change in Katniss and it was really well done. It ends a little differently than the novel, though I read all three so fast I can't be exact certain of where each novel ended, but in the movie they don't start their tour yet, they just return home.

Overall it is a good adaptation and I can't wait to watch it again to see more parts I am forgetting now as I write this (totally sleep deprived) Thoguhts? Have you seen it yet?

Hunger Games Mall Tour kicks off in LA

Fans packed the first stop on the Hunger Games Mall Tour in LA today.

See more photos at mockinjay.net

There are a lot of videos on youtube, but most are screaming fans and a bit of the cast on the mics.

Seeing these videos made me decide I will SKIP Seattle's Mall stop in order to get to LA earlier and scope the scene for the Hunger Games premiere. I am so excited, but also nervous because I am not sure what to expect.

Having done Breaking Dawn Part 1 which was a bit insane, I am anxious for Hunger Games. I did register so I think I will be in as long as I am in the first 400 people in line - but I hope they email all the registered guests with some more information, I am feeling a little uncertain.

Anyways - here is one of many videos from today's Mall stop:

Hunger Games Director Gary Ross discusses Teaser

MTV has an exclusive interview with Hunger Games director Gary Ross on location filming in North Carolina via Skype!

Katniss Vision
Suzanne Collins’ novel is a first-person tale, and it’s clear from the teaser Ross is striving to capture that same sort of immediate access into Katniss’ head. “I think one of the most important things when you adapt a book like this is to give people the experience they really had when they read it — the same kind of visceral experience they had,” he explained. “I think [the reason] everybody felt so strongly in what Suzanne did was that they were with this character, they understood her, they were in her shoes, they were in her head. It was such an intense first-person experience. My job in making a film is first and foremost to reflect that.

“How do we get inside Katniss’ head? How do we feel what she’s feeling? How do we become her?” Ross continued. “The first thing that allows you to do that is Jennifer Lawrence, because she’s such an unbelievable actor. She has so much depth and power and talent and sophistication and sensitivity and subtly that she’s become Katniss Everdeen synonymously. I hope people feel about Jen and Katniss at the end of this three-book cycle the way they feel about Daniel Radcliffe and Harry Potter — that they’ve become very, synonymous with one another.”

Gale’s Voiceover
That voiceover you hear during the trailer? That’s Katniss’ District 12 pal Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth). And Ross has a very specific idea in mind about the importance of making Gale a part of this initial footage (and not Katniss’ Hunger Games companion, Peeta Mellark).

“As everyone knows, Gale is an enormous part of Katniss’ life, but he’s not as big a part of the first book as he is the subsequent books,” the director told us. “I think he’s very, very present and he’s tremendously important, but of course we shift into the Capitol and then the arena, where Peeta ends up playing a more prominent role. But he’s in her head, he’s in her life, he’s something that echoes with her throughout the games, as any reader of the book knows, so he plays an obviously prominent role.”

The Difficulty of the Shoot
Though Ross and his team didn’t have to contend with giant fireballs in the woods, as Katniss does in the first look, the filmmaker revealed that the set in the North Carolina forest posed quite a challenge to the production. “This was like shooting in Vietnam,” he said. “I felt like I was making ‘Apocalypse Now.’ The thing was so rigorous. We spent something like six weeks outside in the jungle every day, hiking up and down mountains with cameras and in the mud and in driving rain storms. We all felt it, but nobody felt it as much as Jen did. It’s been an intense physical experience for her.”

Just Getting Started
While Ross was proud to show off this initial footage, he told us this is only the beginning and that there are a few scenes and characters in particular that he can’t wait for people to see in the future. “We’re still shooting, so unfortunately, it’s just a teaser,” he said. “We could only give you a little bit, because we’re still down here making the movie. I’ve got to leave in half an hour and shoot. But there’s a lot of things to come that I think are going to be hugely epic and very emotional and incredibly powerful. I think that we’ve done wonderful things with the mutts. I think that we’ve done a tremendous job bringing the Capitol to life, and I think that’s going to be really, really exciting for people to see. And all the performances! Wait till you see Stanley Tucci do Caesar Flickerman.”

Hunger Games Teaser Trailer from MTV VMAs

Jennifer Lawrence introduced the clip and while I was disappointed we did not get more, it IS still filming, it IS just a teaser, and it WAS more than we would get from other production studios this early on *ahem*

Director Gary Ross told MTV:

The teaser comes to a close as Katniss indeed shows how good she is: arrow meeting flaming target. But all this is just a taste of what’s to come, as director Gary Ross told MTV News earlier this week. “We’re still shooting, so unfortunately it’s just a teaser. We could only give you a little bit because we’re still down here making the movie,” he said. “But there’s a lot of things to come that I think are going to be hugely epic and very emotional and incredibly powerful.”

Here is the clip:

I loved the landscape, I loved seeing Katniss' emotion as well as her amazing archery skills. The voice (of Gale?) was nice too, though seeing him and Peeta would have made it better (obviously) There is speculation that Rue's 4 note song is heard at the end (about 1 minute mark) though some complained it was X-filesy and not part of the trailer just MTV's thing - I guess we will soon find out. I like it as Rue's tune...

I want more... but I will be patient, well, as patient as possible...

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEee

Thoughts?

Hunger Games Trailer at MTV Awards Tonight

On show night, Jennifer Lawrence will be introducing the first look. Afterward, we’ll be bringing you an exclusive online-video commentary from “Hunger Games” director Gary Ross, who will lend insight into the footage and answer some burning questions we have about the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling young adult novel.

I can't view this because MTV hates Canada but if you can see it - enjoy:
