Blood relations ... Stephenie Meyer is set to meet her readers
It's a risky decision, but the Twilight author, guardian.co.uk on Stephenie Meyer"">Stephenie Meyer, is setting out to meet her most rabid fans next month.
The bestselling writer, who undertook the "normal press junket" for the film of her first book Twilight, and appeared on Oprah to publicise the second, New Moon,
decided she wanted to meet her most ardent admirers for the film of her
third novel, Eclipse.
While the first two experiences were "fun [and] exciting", they "both had the same drawback", the author said in a message to fans. "The interviews were designed for a very broad
audience, and because of that, most of the questions were about things
you guys have known the answers to for years. I feel like all of the
basic questions have been answered, and for Eclipse I want to focus on
the more specific questions of the readers."
So, she put the names of all her US fansites into a hat, and picked out four. She's invited each site to send two members of staff to her "fan-centric mini-junket"
on 18 June – the week before the Los Angeles premiere of Eclipse – and
is promising to answer all of their questions. "We'll have lunch, hang
out, and hopefully have a fantastic time," Meyer told the fansites.
The news, predictably, sent Twilight fandom wild. "I will be there with bells on," wrote Alison of Twifans.com. "I am RSVPing
at this moment. Are we having a sleepover and braiding each other's hair
while talking about sexy vampires!?! ... I will try to reign in my
fangirlness until you get to know me."
Letters to Twilight, meanwhile, promised to ask the tough questions that fans have been desperate to get an answer to – including when Meyer might publish
Midnight Sun, vampire Edward's perspective on his romance with Bella,
which she shelved in 2008 after it was leaked online.
The site also pondered whether to ask the author about what happens when Bella, human girlfriend of vampire Edward, gets her period. "Should we push her
for the REAL answer 'I didn't think about that one - give me a break'
since none of us believe that 'the blood is dead' crap?" it wondered.
The Mormon author is, undoubtedly, quaking in her boots.
