Snow White and the Huntsman (SWATH) Panel at SDCC

Today at SDCC the 'Snow White and the Huntsman' panel revealed some information on the film, which is set to start filming next week. We learned a bit more about the plot, inspiration, and most exciting, the wardrobe, as seen in the .gif above.

The panel included in person appearances from:
-Rupert Sanders (director)
-Joe Roth and Palak Patel (producers)
-Kristen Stewart (Snow White)
-Chris Hemsworth (Huntsman)
-Charlize Theron (Queen)
-Sam Claflin (Prince)

The film is scheduled for release only 10 weeks after the "other" Snow White film, which stars Lily Collins, but quite clearly is taking a darker, more epic battle approach.

iamrogue writes:

The biggest difference between “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which will be released by Universal Pictures next June 1, and the competing Snow White film from Relativity Media, which comes out March 16, is that their “rough tough” film is more on the scale of “Lord of the Rings,” whereas the other seems “softer,” said producer Joe Roth. He added that while he was an executive at Disney, they released “Armageddon” seven weeks after “Deep Impact,” and both made money. Not only that, he said that according to research, people were more likely to see “Armageddon” if they’d seen “Deep Impact” first. The two Snow White films will be released 10 weeks apart

What other differences are there between the two Snow White films?

Wall Street Journal explains:

One plot point the panel presenters did disclose was that instead of seven dwarfs, “Snow White and the Huntsman” would have eight and be portrayed by the likes of Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins and Ian McShane. (“They’re my tough, East End British SAS squad,” joked Sanders.) He then added that the reason there were eight was because there’s a few great lines when (spoiler alert!) one of them gets killed. “It’s a copyright issue,” he said.

Twilight fans devoted to Kristen Stewart will be glad to see her as a rougher Snow White, Yahoo News Reports:

The "Twilight" star told a Comic-Con crowd that doing a sweet, traditional Snow White was not something "I was jumping at." What attracted her was that this Snow White was a bold leader with her feet firmly on the ground.

"Also, I get to have a sword and stuff," Stewart said. "Really cool weapons."

The big reveal of the panel consisted of four images of the principal cast in costumes designed by Oscar winner Colleen Atwood. First up was Sam Claflin as the Prince. During the panel, Claflin mentioned that this take on the Prince is not necessarily as charming as you'd expect, and the image supported that, as he wore a suit of chainmail and armor that was vaguely sinister at the very least.

The first image of Hemsworth as the titular Huntsman showed him to be a salt of the Earth type, shouldering an axe and wearing an outfit of dirty, worn-in leathers.

Next up was Charlize Theron as the Queen, and her ensemble was a study in contrasts, with her white-out skin and blond hair against a dress of reflective black triangles. The collar on this, the most stylized of all the images, jutted out at an extreme angle recalling a peacock, with white reflective bits against the primarily black dress. Not to put too fine a point on it, she cradled a very dangerous-looking curved dagger. Theron remarked that her character is basically a serial killer, and the image conveyed the threat she represents very well.

Finally, there was Kristen Stewart as Snow White herself. This image was the most unexpected, as she wore no skirt, but was instead adorned in battle armor complete with a sword and shield that very much recalled Lord of the Rings.

Both the footage and the preliminary images from Snow White and the Huntsman demonstrated that the creative team is aiming to make a epic, battle-filled fantasy adventure based only loosely on the fairy tale. The film is currently set for June 1, 2012.

Certainly, Stewart and Theron seemed ready for the adventure. Stewart said part of the reason she was attracted to the role was because she got to have a sword. Theron then jokingly said to her new co-star, “I’m ready for it, b—-. Let’s go.”

First Photo: Lily Collins in Snow White

We already know there are two Snow White movies coming up - the Lily Collings version and the Kristen Stewart version.

Hitfix writes:

Relativity has made the first move in the promo department however, with this brand new still of Snow White herself, Lily Collins.

Collins stars alongside Julia Roberts and Armie Hammer ("The Social Network") in the as-of-now untitled Snow White film from Relativity Media, directed by Tarsem Singh ("The Cell," the upcoming "Immortals").

The other movie, "Snow White and the Huntsman" promises a grittier take on the tale and stars Kristen Stewart ("The Twilight Saga"), Chris Hemsworth ("Thor") and Oscar-winner Charlize Theron ("Monster").

This Snow White opens nationwide March 16, 2012, with "Huntsman" following in June 2012.

I worry that because 'Huntsman' opens second people won't see TWO Snow White's within a few months, but Kristen has a HUGE Twilight following and it looks to be a rougher movie that may attract a different crowd - time will tell.

Snow White vs. Snow White

The battle is heating up between dueling Snow White adaptations!

“The concept of dueling movies is a time-honored tradition,” says Hollywood.com box-office tracker Paul Dergarabedian, citing examples such as Dante’s Peak vs. Volcano and Tombstone vs. Wyatt Earp. “No one wants to have another film in the running with the same scenario. Once the first one comes out, it is hard to convince audiences to go again. In their mind, it’s the same movie.”

Check it out on USA Today.

What do you think of the rivalry?

Who is better?

Kristen Stewart vs. Lily Collins

Chris Hemsworth vs. Armie Hammer

Charlize Theron vs. Julia Roberts

Action vs. Rom-Com?

Seven Dwarfs Cast for Snow White (Lilly Collins version)

I am excited about some of this casting, including Mark Povinelli who I met in New York last month for the Water for Elephants Premiere.

Deadline writes:
Relativity Media has closed deals with Mark Povinelli (Water for Elephants), Jordan Prentice (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle), Danny Woodburn (Watchmen), Sebastian Saraceno (Bedtime Stories), Ronald Lee Clark (Epic Movie), Martin Klebba (Hancock) and Joey Gnoffo (Pirates of the Caribbean series) to play the Seven Dwarfs in its upcoming untitled Snow White feature, directed by Tarsem Singh (Immortals, The Cell). The studio has also cast Mare Winningham (Brothers) as Baker Margaret and Michael Lerner (Elf) as Baron.

The nine actors join the previously announced cast in which Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts plays the Queen, Lily Collins (The Blind Side) plays Snow White, Armie Hammer (The Social Network) plays Prince Andrew Alcott, and Nathan Lane (The Lion King, The Birdcage) plays the Queen’s hapless and bungling servant, Brighton.

Two Snow White Movies in one year..

Kristen Stewart, and Chris Hemsworth’s fairy tale Snow White and the Huntsman will release June 1, 2012 (from December 2012), and Relativity moved up their Snow White with Lily Collins all the way to March 16, 2012.

For a few days, the two films were scheduled for next June.

Although there are now more space between the films, some industry observers continue to express doubt about the application of two distinct major films based on the same character in a single theater season.

Kristen Stewart as Snow White?

According to THR:

The Twilight star is in negotiations to star in Snow White and the Huntsman, putting her on the road to topline the movie alongside Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron for Universal’s take on the fairy tale.

The deal is not done and could still fall apart, but both sides want it to happen.

Stewart is a name that Universal kept coming back to since acquiring the project. Still, it went through a series of screen tests with actresses such as Riley Keough, Felicity Jones and Alicia Vikander. As The Hollywood Reporter previously reported, Stewart was still being courted as late as last week, and Universal finally made an offer over the weekend.

I think she'd do great. I have no idea how much truth there isw to this rumour but I think it would be awesome. I think I'd love her in a modern gothic kind of take on Snow White.. I dunno.
