Pitch Perfect Review #getpitchslapped

Went to an advanced screening of 'Pitch Perfect' tonight staring Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp and Skylar Astin. My only complaint is that I have to wait until October 5 to take my friends! Pitch Perfect had me dancing in my seat, laughing out loud and leaving the theatre smiling.

In this movie, aspiring dj Becca, arrives reluctantly to the university her father is forcing her to attend, despite her desire to move to L.A. to start 'paying her dues' to move up in the music industry. The university has 4 a capella singing groups (think Glee, but with slightly less incest amongst members hooking up, yes slightly). Last years winners "Treble makers" are led by the obnoxious 'Bumper' played by Adam Devine, who comes off as just the right amount of annoying that you love to hate him. The all-female group "The Belles" led by Aubrey (Anna Camp, who was Sarah Newlin in True Blood) are struggling to recruit new members after a massive embarassment last year that has tarnished their reputation. (I will add this "embarrassment" haunts Aubrey throughout the film and is pure physical humour)

Through a series of events, Becca joins the Belles and with her dj skills is able to take the out-dated song choices and structured dance routines to the next level, but not without resistance from the controlling Aubrey. As always, Anna Kendrick is a star, she is one of my favourite young actresses, I love her facial expressions and comedic timing.

The movie also includes a budding romance involving swoon-worthy Skylar Astin playing the adorable, witty and talented Jesse. Seriously, this character has you in love with everything about him in a very non-traditional way.

Between the budding romance, the mean girl struggle and the parent/daughter issues, Pitch Perfect also has some hilarious minor characters, a part-job for Becca at the campus radio station and it throws in some epic John Hughes for good measure.

What I appreciated about this movie is that it did not have an overly obvious and predictable plot and still found subtle ways to keep me guessing and entertained until the end. The music was well integrated to prevent it from being an overtly awkward musical (no random breaking into song as they walk across campus for example) and the song choices were a good variety that everyone in the audience could dance (or sing) along.

I really loved the characters and how they all worked together, in particular 'Fat Amy' (Rebel Wilson), 'Bumper' (Adam Devine), Lily (Hana Mae Lee) and Benji (Ben Platt), Jesse's magic-loving nerd roomate. Elizabeth Banks played an emcee for the competitions and added great humour next to her chauvinistic co-host. It's just a great mix of memorable characters who come together creating some major laughs for the audience.

Loaded with one-liners, unique and memorable characters, amazing mashups and performances, this movie is a must-see! I was dancing in my seat, laughing loudly throughout and left happy with the movie overall.

I would highly reccommend going to see this movie October 5, it is hilarious and fun and entertaining and I know I will be going to see it again opening weekend!

September Movies

There are a lot of movies out or coming out that I want to see. I have been really lucky lately to not only go to a lot of movies and screenings but also win some passes. SCORE!

First of all Recent Releases I have seen:

The Help

One Day

Crazy Stupid Love

Contagion

Afraid of the Dark - Was good, not great. The lil critters were scarier than I thought because of how they were built up and used the shadows and darkness.

Dolphin Tale - Which was crowded with screaming kids so we went to Planet of the Apes, which was pretty awesome! I actually enjoyed it more than I thought. To be honest, I had little desire to see it other than it had been filmed (albeit mostly in studio) here in Vancouver. Oh and I love James Franco and like Tom Felton. Oh and baby monkey's are cute.... though after watching this movie I learned how creepy grown apes can be ha ha.

I do still want to see Dolphin Tale - with my daughter...who isn't a screaming brat like most of the kids at that screening I skipped.

Abduction - Which comes out next weekend but I watched last night at the VIP Screening in Seattle.

Upcoming Movies:

This weekend I will see Straw Dogs and Drive. I am so excited to see my boyfriends Ryan Gosling and Alexander Skarsgård this weekend - rawr!

Also next week I have Moneyball and 50/50 screening passes. I didn't even know what the heck Moneyball was and 50/50 I am psyched for because it was filmed here.

Moneyball is about numbers and baseball and money... *shrugs* Brad Pitt makes me willing to see it.

I also want to see some of these movies:

30 minutes or Less - which looks funny but my husband wants to see it also which means we will probably wait for dvd.

Red State - Kevin Smith has talked the shit out of this film and I generally like his stuff, if anything it is an interesting perspective.

Other Upcoming Movies I don't think I will see, but you may enjoy:

Warrior - Apparently there is The Hunger Games teaser before this movie, which would be the only reason I go see it. Just not my cup of tea though seems to remind me of The Fighter?!

I've got your Number - This looks cute and funny. I love Anna Faris, Chris Evans is hot and some of her "ex boyfriends" (Joel McHale, Chris Pratt (Faris’s actual husband), Anthony Mackie, Andy Samberg, Martin Freeman and Zachary Quinto to name a few)

Also in October:

The Ides of March More Ryan Gosling - yes please

FootLoose I am sure it will not be as good as the original but I will check it out

anyways

The Big Year Filmed (partially) here so I may check it out.

Fireflies in the Garden Julia Roberts and Ryan Renyolds

Paranormal Activity 3 Looks like it actually has a plot

In Time Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried

What did I miss that you are wanting to see or have seen and enjoyed?

Anna Kendrick in Flaunt Magazine

The 24-year-old Oscar nominated actress opens up about how Scott Pilgrim parallels her life, being vulnerable like Catherine and Jessica being a “weirdo.”

On Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: “I didn’t realize it until I started doing press. but I’m completely playing myself. Like, I didn’t do anything to work on this because I know this role, I know who she is. Done and done. Stacey tries to reach out to Scott and say, ‘You know I’m here for you,’ and then right back into, ‘Well, your hair looks stupid or whatever.’ And that’s exactly the way my relationship is with my brother—you can only go so far before you call him a d-bag.”

On who she channeled for Jessica Stanley: “I don’t know who exactly Jessica comes from, but there was one girl in particular from my high school. And she was a nightmare and was a little weirdo.”

On her next movie, Live With It: “Catherine is much more vulnerable [than other roles I’ve played]. And I liked that about her because I was in an awards season labyrinth and I was feeling really vulnerable so I was happy to go and shoot that immediately.”

Scott Pilgram vs The World Premiere in Toronto

I am not loving this dress, maybe it's the colour?

Purple was my very fave in jr. high school then by high school I started to love green.... funny we were told purple represented prudish/sexually deprived and green represented horny/sexually fulfilled...

it was about when i lost my virginity that my favourite colour changed... hmmm... ;) ha ha
