Twilight Book Sales Slow down

According to Lagarder, the parent comply of Hachette & Little Brown, Twilight sales have finally reached a plateau of sorts. According to an article in The Book Seller:

“Lagardère Pubishing saw a 6.5% decline in revenues for the first quarter of 2010, with sales down from €30m to €433m for the period to end-March 2010 after what it described as “the expected erosion in Stephenie Meyer sales”.

Hachette UK said its sales had been “strong” in the first quarter of 2010, with underlying sales across HUK up on 2009 and “considerably ahead of expectation”. This was despite continuing international economic uncertainty, and a fall of 6% in the overall UK market. Hachette UK added that “inevitably, sales of Stephenie Meyer’s backlist have steadied after their phenomenal performance in 2010″.

Business Week is also reporting on the trend.

“Lagardere last year benefitted from the success of Meyer’s vampire-themed “Twilight” novels, published by its Hachette Book Group unit. In 2010 guidance issued in March, the company said its publishing division would see a “return to normal” after brisk sales of “Twilight” books and related products.

Last month, the company fought off a challenge from American activist shareholder Guy Wyser-Pratte, who sought a board seat to force a “strategic review” and changes to a corporate structure that gives Arnaud Lagardere extra powers.”

You can see a bit of the trend on this week’s New York Times Bestseller Lists. The Twilight Graphic novel is in second position in its category(graphic books). The Twilight Saga books are in forth in their category (Children’s series: note there is no YA distinction) behind the House of Night series, Percy Jackson, and Diary of a Whimpy Kid. It should also be noted that The Host paperback edition is in fifth place in its category. So while not gone from the lists, the books do not have their previous stranglehold on the top spots in all categories.

What will really be interesting to watch is how well the Bree Tanner novella performs when it goes on sale June 5th. It will mark the first time any new Twilight specific information has come out in almost two years. How many people will opt for a hardcover version vs. how many people will want the PDF free version.

Mandy's Mind - This slow down is inevitable is it not? I think it will pick up again with the release of the new novella. I will be purchasing the hard cover of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella (Twilight Saga)
to go with my collection... though I will likely download it first to read ASAP ;)

Eclipse Movie Companion

I can't wait for this... the New Moon one was like reading my own journal. Having been to many stes and seen what was happening it was so nice to read it from the producers and directors point of view and see angles, views and photos from the OTHER side. Eclipse will be even more exciting as filming was more secretive and deceptive than New Moon, so the pieces we put together as fans were very much "best guesses" based on what we could see, hear, learn, recall from book.... Suffice it to say this Eclipse Movie companion will offer me a lot of surprises and a lot of reassurance that I was right in my guesses ha ha.

Eclipse Movie . Org says:

According to Reel Empire and Amazon, The Twilight Saga Eclipse Official Illustrated Movie Companion will be released June 29th, 2010, one day before the film’s release date in theaters June 30th, 2010.

Amazon has confirmed the release date for the “Twilight Saga Eclipse: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion” which will hit retail shelves June 29th, 2010. They also revealed the release date for the mass market paperback edition for “Eclipse” which is May 25th. At the moment, no cover images have been released for either product.

One day before the movie release date of Eclipse? I guess this is to keep it spoiler free. What about the people who want the spoilers?! I want the spoilers! LOL!

I really can’t wait to see the Eclipse movie companion! Seriously! Move up the release date!

You can pre-order The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion at Amazon!

I agree, ONE DAY before... I will buy it that morning, read through it quickly, go set-up for the Eclipse Movie Release Party (Since our New Moon one was so fun) then go to the midnight release (or 10pm if they do what New Moon did) *Squeeeee*

I also would LOVE to go to the premiere but we shall see ;)

What do you think? June 29th too late to offer the movie companion? I remember thinking New Moon's came out SOOOOOO early, but it was nice to tide me over... and we will have Bree Tanner novella to help occupy our waiting time....

OMG - After Eclipse we have TOO MUCH TIME to wait, I mean Breaking Dawn hasn't even officially announced a director *GAH*

A New Book from Stephenie Meyer - The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

What an amazing good morning announcement.

Stephenie's Website says:

Surprise!

I have a new book coming out. It's called The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. Well, it's more of a novella than an actual book—my version of a short story.

Actually, this has been a surprise to me, too. The reason why it's a surprise was that I never intended to publish this story as a stand-alone book. I began this story a long time ago—before Twilight was even released. Back then I was just editing Eclipse, and in the thick of my vampire world. I was thinking a lot about the newborns, imagining their side of the story, and one thing led to another. I started writing from Bree's perspective about those final days, and what it was like to be a newborn.

This story was something that I worked on off and on for a while, just for fun, in between the times I was writing or editing other Twilight novels. Later, when the concept for The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide came up, I thought that might be a good place for Bree. Her story is a nice complement to Eclipse; it explains a lot of the things that Bella never knew. So I dusted it off and finished it up for placement in the Guide.

At the same time, it came in handy for the Eclipse film. Melissa (Rosenberg, the screenwriter) had a ton of questions about what exactly was going on in Seattle, how Victoria managed things, what Riley was like, etc. I let her read what I had then, and later gave the whole thing to the director, David Slade. David asked if Xavier, Bryce, and Jodelle (Riley, Victoria, and Bree) could read it as well, so all the parties involved would end up having a really strong foundation for their characters before the cameras started rolling. I was pleased that this side of the story would make it into the film and was looking forward to including it in the Guide.

(Keeping it confidential: Here is Jodelle next to the bucket of waterlogged ashes that were once the pages of her copy of the Bree manuscript.)

Then I got the news: my "short story" was nearly 200 pages long when typeset. It was too long to fit into the Guide—without ending up with a tome as heavy as the Oxford English Dictionary. My publisher approached me with the idea of releasing the Bree story on its own. One of the major benefits of this plan was that it would be out before the movie, so people would get to know Bree before they saw her in the film. That made sense to me, and we decided to go ahead with it.

There was one thing I asked for: since this story had always been an extra for me, and was meant to be released with the Guide, I wanted to be able to offer it to my fans for free. You all have bought a ton of my books, and I wanted to give you this story as a gift. My publisher was awesome and embraced this idea. We still wanted to also produce a physical book with a cool cover (see below) that you can add to your set if you like, but starting at noon on June 7th until July 5th, it will also be available online at http://www.breetanner.com/.

One other aspect of this release is the plan to give a more important gift to people who really need it. One dollar of each book purchased in the US from the first printing will be donated to the American Red Cross for their relief efforts in Haiti and Chile and other parts of the world where people are in great need. We're going to have an option online as well, so you can choose to make a donation if you want when you read the story online. I hope you will. I think that we can really help a lot of people with this.

I really hope you all enjoy this story. I had a blast writing it. I'm glad that after all this time cooling her heels in my files, Bree finally gets her chance to shine.

Thanks for all the support,

Steph

Mandy's Mind - When I first saw "New Book" I thought instincitvely that it was Part 2 for The Host... good, but not great ews as I haven't brought myself into that world yet... When I saw it was this - I nearly screamed myself awake from my cozy bed.... I can't WAIT for this - truly - excited!

Of all the stories to tell... Bree?

I am shocked and excited and hopefuly that Stephenie will write more (or rather, release more) on the back stories of our main characters so we can see more into the past of the Cullen's lives :)

And before Eclipse even??
Awesome Surprise!!!

Side Note - I feel like this is a marketing test also... bare with me for a moment... sheis releasing it for free online... but also for sale if you want a copy... personally, I want a copy... but my thought process (and I over think things perhapxs too often) is that this marketing test will show how many fans will STILL buy the book when it's available online... and my theory is that if many still do purchase books despite their availability online, it shows Stephenie that even if things (such as an unfinished novel drafts for example lol) are released (unfinished or not, with permissionor not)... people will STILL want to buy them.... (in other words, Steph please finish Midnight Sun ha ha)

Photos from this Weeks Set

I have a ton of photos and picked just a few to share with you since this particular b-unit set has (to my knowledge) wrapped at this location.

The main unit has been in a spot that is on private property and therefore I was not able to go get photos of that set. [I only go to public places and I do not break any laws or trespass!!]

That being said - allow me to share with you my photos from Monday and Tuesday this week:

First up is the set-up of b-unit's set on Monday September 14.

Added a "dock" to put cameras on and had scuba divers underneath and around it preparing it.

Equipment for scuba guys and set-up

Hot Tub for between shoots to keep warm.

Trailers for the main unit. This is where we saw the cast go in after they wrapped.

It was exciting to see the fake trees going up, the dock being put in place, the underwater set up team and other props being put out in preparation for the b-unit shoot.

And now some photos from yesterday's B-Unit Shoot Tuesday September 15.

On the other side of the dock you can see vampire extras walking out of the water.

Crew hard at work on the dock

Great Shot of one of the vampires walking back into the water to prepare to shoot them exiting water (again)

It was amazing to see how many time they shot the same thing over and over and over, then re-set the camera angles and lights to re-shoot the same thing over and over again and again. Tedious and less glamourous than people think that's for sure.

Wider Shot of the Set

Re-settting

Adjusting the camera angles

I do not know if that girl is crew or cast....

Bree (played by Jodelle Ferland) along with her extra were in a green hat from what I could tell. I do not know if this is her, an extra or simply someone else.

I have a very basic camera so it was very blurry as I didn't want to use flash or walk up there to the set and interfere with the filming.

Vampires preparing to re-shoot. You can see Riley (played by Xavier Samuel) standing in a brown hoodie getting his make-up re-touched.

Vampires re-setting to be filmed walking out of the water.

I believe Riley is 2nd from the left, beside the bald vampire.

Here are a bunch more of the filming and re-setting of the same shot:

The vampires would simply go underwater once the camera was rolling then one by one emerge out of the water and walk slowly, menacingly towards to the shore. I love the darker angle David Slade is taking to this movie. I can't wait for Eclipse to come out... but I have to wait for New Moon first... which I can't wait for either :)

Today's Filming - Battle Scene? New Borns Arrive! September 15

There were two sets today.

Main Set
The main cast was at the same location as yesterday, where they did the fight training scene.

We also know that The Wolf-Pack is in town right now.

Twitter News:
Peter Facinelli tweeted:Heading to work. Gonna get lost in the woods with some werewolves today.

That along with David Slade's tweets, yesterday:Forrest again today, tomorrow we do wolf shots, saw some great wolf tests today, early stages developed from New Moon wolves.

Predictions
All of this leads me to believe they filmed the "battle" scene everyone is so excited for.... are there any other scenes with all the Cullen's and the wolf-pack together outdoors?

Since it was the same location as yesterday [and quite impossible to get to unless you are with the production company or breaking laws,] I didn't even bother trying to get close but instead enjoyed watching the B-Unit film. (Xavier, Jodelle and extras were all on this set)

I do know that the Main Set wrapped around dinner time and 2 fans from Florida who were at the circus (hair/make-up/wardrobe trailers/tents) entrance had an amazing opportunity to meet and get photos with several cast memebers including Kellan Lutz, Nikki Reed, Ashley Greene and Elizabeth Reaser after they finished filming. (Also Peter Facinelli, Jackson Rathbone and even a "peace sign" from David Slade)

B-Unit Set
Here is what I observed:

  • Vampires emerging from the water.

  • Vampires had wet suits on underneath "street clothes."

  • Some vampires were in suits, others in hoodies and pants.

  • One of the vampires (leading the pack) was Riley.

  • They shot from every angle imaginable.

  • There was a hot tub on set for between shots.

  • Bree was on set (Jodelle Ferland) and I actually saw her along with other vampire extras when I used the public bathroom.

  • They had red contacts that made their eyes look absolutely evil.

  • They had white make-up on their faces and visible upper body parts.

  • Riley had a brown hoodie on.

  • There were two bald vampires.

  • Riley is the first to come out of the water, then the other vampires (simply numbered off during the shoot) emerge.

  • They walk out of the water and onto the shore.

    Based on these observations
I think this is around or just before Ch 25 (Mirror) [Read summary at Twilight Lexicon] when the New Borns (led by Riley) come to Forks. I think (as often happens) the movie has changed from the book a bit to allow an easy and stunning visual of the New Born Army arriving on the shore of Forks to take over.

I could be wrong but this is my best guess based on what I observed and the plot of the novel.

I took a few photos which I will post by Friday. As I said in yesterdays blog I don't want to post any photos until the location wraps - and usually I don't even post details until after the location wraps but it was so very exciting I couldn't wait to share it with you all.

I am so excited about Eclipse - I think David Slade is doing such an amazing job from what I have been able to catch glimpses of. It is so strange to see filming of Eclipse and being so excited for a movie that doesn't come out until next summer... especially strange is that I haven't seen New Moon yet and am still so excited for the third installment of the Twilight Saga.
