Nominations for MTV Movie Awards

Yesterday twitter was a flitter (is that a word?) with Twilight Fans hashtagging their hate for MTV.

As a Canadian who thinks MTV hates Canada (can't watch their videos here) I was curious what had happened. The responses I got were that MTV *ONLY* nominated Twilight for best kiss and best movie.... ok... huh?

Well, in the past Twilight has been nominated for every possible category (Best Male, Best Female, Best Cast, Best Fight, Break Through, and so on...) in the past, Twilight has also swept most of the categories it has been nominated for.

So here is a thought... who cares?

We all love Twilight, we know if nominated it would sweep, but honestly, is an MTV Movie award so prestigious that we need every category nominated and won? For serious folks?!?!

I am not offended by this, there *ARE* other movies that exsist... *shocker* and although I have enjoyed the MTV/Twilight awards in the past, I am ok with recognizing other flicks... and yes that includes making way for the new Hunger Games.

I don't know if they will go with a Harry Potter Sweep as a final good-bye or a Hunger Games sweep as a big push/welcome.... You never know.... but it is rarely spread out evenly ha ha!

What are your predictions? I could be way off - I think where I will be wrong is where I went Hunger Games or Harry Potter and it's the opposite....

Straw Dogs and Drive

So I went and saw both last night and have to say that I am really glad there were cute boys in them. Don't get me wrong, they both had their good parts, but they were both pretty violent and not at all what I expected. Let's look at Straw Dogs First It is a remake of a 1971 movie that I have not seen. James Marsden is cute, but his character is annoying in this movie. Kate Bosworth is pretty but again her character is annoying. What is worse is that the two of them together are not believable as a married couple, it is all just bizzare. They seem to have this strong loving relationship but then she does the strangest things, like a scene in the window watching the roofers, or when she keeps the violent crime to her self or calls her husband a coward. I just found myself saying "she isn't worth the trouble dude, go back to LA and leave her ass in Mississippi" Alexander Skarsgard is hot. He is a rapist and probably worse (is there worse?) but he is hot and I don't even feel bad enjoying watching him do bad things. James Woods plays the old alcoholic, has-been football coach with a teenage daughter. The story line with his daughter is loose and not fully developed, much like a number of subplots that either aren't wrapped up at the end of not developed throughout the movie. I was so shocked to see Dominic Purcell in the movie, he plays an adult with special needs and I was very impressed with his acting. I love him! Overall, I wasn't a huge fan. It was less violent than I thought, and though it had a good premise and I am sure the original was great, this movie didn't have the horror feeling it is supposed to, nor the thriller aspect I hoped for. It was just odd. thank goodness for the hot men! Drive I went to see this for once reason only. Ryan Gosling. I knew it was about a driver, that was it. Ryan gosling as a driver and I was sold! My friend Amy told me a bit more... he is a stunt driver by day and a get-away driver for criminals at night. OK So the movie had a strange feel to it. It was not at all what I expected, far more violent and noire. But, Ryan Gosling was fabulous and oh so pretty... he played the unnamed, mysterious driver who amidst his involvement in the criminal activities in L.A. befriends his neighbour, Carey Mulligan and her son. Since her husband is in jail, they become lose fast uintil the husband returns and then Gosling is pulled into more crime with him. Overall it is dark and violent, though inadvertently humourous (the whole theatre laughed, albeit nervously, during a scene involving blood splatter and killing) I liked it, but it is not the kind of film youw ould expect to see - it had a strange feel to it that I really did like, hoever unexpected. I'd say see Drive, wait for dvd for Straw Dogs (sorry Alex, James and Dom i love you)

September Movies

There are a lot of movies out or coming out that I want to see. I have been really lucky lately to not only go to a lot of movies and screenings but also win some passes. SCORE!

Afraid of the Dark - Was good, not great. The lil critters were scarier than I thought because of how they were built up and used the shadows and darkness.

Dolphin Tale - Which was crowded with screaming kids so we went to Planet of the Apes, which was pretty awesome! I actually enjoyed it more than I thought. To be honest, I had little desire to see it other than it had been filmed (albeit mostly in studio) here in Vancouver. Oh and I love James Franco and like Tom Felton. Oh and baby monkey's are cute.... though after watching this movie I learned how creepy grown apes can be ha ha.

I do still want to see Dolphin Tale - with my daughter...who isn't a screaming brat like most of the kids at that screening I skipped.

Abduction - Which comes out next weekend but I watched last night at the VIP Screening in Seattle.

Upcoming Movies:

This weekend I will see Straw Dogs and Drive. I am so excited to see my boyfriends Ryan Gosling and Alexander Skarsgård this weekend - rawr!

Also next week I have Moneyball and 50/50 screening passes. I didn't even know what the heck Moneyball was and 50/50 I am psyched for because it was filmed here.

Moneyball is about numbers and baseball and money... *shrugs* Brad Pitt makes me willing to see it.

I also want to see some of these movies:

30 minutes or Less - which looks funny but my husband wants to see it also which means we will probably wait for dvd.

Red State - Kevin Smith has talked the shit out of this film and I generally like his stuff, if anything it is an interesting perspective.

Warrior - Apparently there is The Hunger Games teaser before this movie, which would be the only reason I go see it. Just not my cup of tea though seems to remind me of The Fighter?!

So I predicted the twist, which is that Emma Stone is Julianne Moore and Steve Carrall's daughter. I guessed because the women are both pale red heads who are hot!

I did not predict that Marisa Tomei's character was the teacher, that was a hilarious twist.

I thought the kid was amazing. He was a great actor and fully pulled the movie along in all the right moments.

The babysitter was a whore ha ha

The story is this, for those who are under a rock...

Wife and Husband divorce, wife slept with co-worker, husband is depressed, husband meets stud, stud helps husband get girls, babysitter crushes on husband, kid crushes on babysitter, older daughter has random subplot of becoming a lawyer with a loser boyfriend and getting hit on by stud, loser boyfriend acts like more of a loser so she leaves him for stud, stud falls in love with her and goes to meet her parents which are... husband and wife. Meanwhile babysitters parents discover her nude photos for husband, husband is trying to fix relationship with wife and wife's co-worker whos he slept with shows up - - - all in the same yard, boys wrestling fight begins, cops come, funny moment.

In the end the kid's hopeless romantic side brings everyone back together and they all live happily ever after - the end

We have already started this month and I have seen Bridesmaids and Something Borrowed. I also went to the drive-in and slept through Rango, Thor and a third movie... oops!

Not a fan of Ashley Greene, but love the 80s. Even so0 I can get my 80s fix with ANY OTHER 80s MOVIE... or even a modern movie that takes place in the 80s... Adventureland please? We'll see, this islikely a dvd wait...



Beautiful Boy

I must see this. I cry watching the trailer even! It will be an embarassing bawling movie but I love the actors, I sympathize with the plot and I must see this!

Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan at Cannes for DRIVE

Drive, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, is based on the novel by James Sallis and stars Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan. The film follows a stunt driver (Gosling) who moonlights as a getaway driver-for-hire and gets mixed up with the wrong crowd. The film also stars Ron Perlman, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Christina Hendricks and Oscar Issac.

Blue Valentine

I went and saw Blue Valentine.

It was very moving.

It was like they took the reality of relationships and exposed them.

I could relate to parts of the characters love and turmoil. I have experienced some of those things in my marriage and moreso in some of my previous relationships, but I think that is why it works.

It is real.

Ryan Gosling is amaze. Michelle Williams is fab. The story is superb.

It is not a must-see in theatre. In fact the hand held camera shots made me feel a bit nauseated and I would have prefered to see it at home on dvd. (In fact, I probably will get the dvd it was really great)

Have you seen it? Thoughts?

It was sad, but real. I felt it ended somewhat abruptly, and would have liked a little more, though it was moving and quite clear where the story would go from there I think.

Film Ratings, Violence, Nudity, Blue Valentine, Changing a Culture... My Mumblings...

There are three films I wante to see at NOFF (Mew Orleans Film Festival) in October. Welcolme to the Riley's, 127 Hours and Blue Valentine (ok 4, Black Swan but I don't think it finally got added to the list) Sadly, I didn't get to see them all because I was headed to Vegas for my 30th birthday and the timing overlapped.

There has been good buzz about all these movies, but one that has been a hot topic lately is Blue Valentine staring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. The MPAA has given it a NC17 rating because of a particular love scene which they deem to be inapproporiate.

This idea of ratings is always of interest to me because, for one, I think the MPAA does a shitty job of it in many cases. I have gone into a movie with my daughter and left having to explain a number of things I wouldn't have wanted to discuss to a 7 year old, just yet.

I find in American culture, violence, especially against women, is too accepted in film, whereas nudity is not. Somehow blowing up someone's head is ok, but boobs are not? What is so wrong about sensuality but ok with torturous violence?

In Canada, however, nudity is far more accepted, in fact, you can catch it on regular cable late evenings, whereas violence is less acceptable. There is, in particular, rules against showing violence against women. So lot's of boobs and less blowing up of body parts.

In Europe, similar to Canada, there is more acceptance in showing nudity, there are commercials for skin lotion that hage nude women demonstrating!

My point is this, WHY IS INTIMACY AND NUDITY FROWNED UPON AND VIOLENCE AND TORTURE ACCEPTABLE?

@Larry411 tweeted press release where TWC Co-Chair Harvey Weinstein discusses the issue:

“While we respect the MPAA, I think we can all agree that we are living with an outdated ratings system that gives torture porn, horror and ultraviolent films the same rating as films with so-called inappropriate language,” explains Weinstein.

I could not agree more!!!

I have not seen Blue Valentine yet, but I know quite a few that have and they agree that an NC17 seems harsh. Furthermore, those involved in the film disagree with the rating and are fighting it. The debate (and the rating) is based on one love scene.

BLUE VALENTINE, starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, in a film already acclaimed by critics, tells the honest and personal story of a troubled marriage, and yet apparently drew an NC-17 due to one scene, a sexually intimate sequence between a married couple trying to repair their broken relationship

Lainey writes:

So you know about this business with the MPAA. Blue Valentine has been given an NC17 rating because of a sex scene between a married couple that they feel is too real. Not in the porn sense or anything, I mean it’s not like you can study her labia, but these people, they share an intense, and frustrating, and very emotionally authentic moment. This is apparently much more offensive than seeing a woman violated in an action film.

The Weinstein Company is appealing the decision. In support of the appeal, the film’s two leads have offered their comments. Read Ryan Gosling’s position, and then try to convince me you can still stand up.

“You have to question a cinematic culture which preaches artistic expression, and yet would support a decision that is clearly a product of a patriarchy-dominant society, which tries to control how women are depicted on screen. The MPAA is okay supporting scenes that portray women in scenarios of sexual torture and violence for entertainment purposes, but they are trying to force us to look away from a scene that shows a woman in a sexual scenario, which is both complicit and complex. It’s misogynistic in nature to try and control a woman’s sexual presentation of self. I consider this an issue that is bigger than this film.”

Please. How many other men can turn you on in a WRITTEN STATEMENT?

“The MPAA’s decision on Blue Valentine unmasks a taboo in our culture, that an honest portrayal of a relationship is more threatening than a sensationalized one. Mainstream films often depict sex and violence in a manner that is disturbing and very far from reality. Yet, the MPAA regularly awards these films with a more audience friendly rating, enabling our culture’s desensitization to violence, rape, torture and brutality. Our film does not depict any of these attributes. It’s simply a candid look at the difficulties couples face in sustaining their relationships over time. Blue Valentine opens a door for couples to have a dialogue about the everyday realities of many relationships. This film was made in the spirit of love, honesty and intimacy. I hope that the MPAA will hear our pleas and reconsider their decision.”

First, I agree, Gosling makes me hot with written words, spoken words, a smile, a still photo, gah!

Second, I hope they examine this rating (and all ratings for that matter) and resolve it.

There needs to be clearer guidelines on the ratings. I think if they can rate a love scene NC17 and beating up a woman PG-13 then there is a serious issue in the system!

Ultimately, I will watch what I want, regardless of the rating, but there are many who do not and I think the rating system should be a more accurate depiction of the film's content.

Moreover, I think re-examining socities views and perspective on what is acceptable and what is not should be a more important goal, but clearly this task is larger than one movie or one lawsuit. It is a change in culture and an attempt to eliminate or lessen the desensitization society experiences because of the overload of violence and aggression in film.

Ryan Gosling is NOT a Loser...

I had a failed mission of meeting Ryan Gosling Saturday Night in Vancouver. Although I did see him - twice - I didn't get to chat with him or snap a photo and therefore I deem it a failed mission.

Many people did see him however and they are lucky lil bitches... people who I am very jealous of. LOL

Apparently after the show Ryan went out in Yaletown - *gasp* I know - surprising eh? It's the mecca of everything great and everyone famous it seems.

And before the situation got out of hand, he chilled the place out, defused the agro, and stepped in with his charm to break sh-t up. HOT.

On the romantic side, several people claim to have seen him holding hands with a girl. Others say it seemed totally platonic. And there are also rumours from previous city stops that he’s with one of the female members of his band. Needless to say, nothing is slam dunk. But he’s a musician on the road. He’s enjoying the freedom.

I know his mom and his sister were there.... and I also know he looked hot as ever... even from a distance I could feel his sizzle... rawr!

If only I had gone for a drink in Yaletown as planned instead of head home....

Ah well... Next time perhaps.

Oh Ryan Gosling....

Ryan Gosling's band Dead Man's Bone played at The Venue in Vancouver last night. I went by earlier in the day and just missed them loading their equipment into the venue. Later I heard they were eating at a local resturant and again, just missed that.

I <3 Ryan Gosling... I'd trade in one of my Robert Pattinson encounters for a Ryan Gosling... but it just wasn't to be....

I was with a few friends and we waited in line to see if we could get tickets to the sold out show. They had "limited door sales available" and sadly a few girls in front of me got the last of them.

I went with friends for drinks and eats on Granville Street then returned at the end of the show. I went around back to see if they were loading up equipment and they were.... but they had 2 dozen spectators.

I figured this would be a lost cause, but I didn't want to give up. Ryan's sister came out to let us know they wouldn't be bringing Ryan out.

Many left. Some stayed. I was one of the stayers.

Many of the choir kids came out with smiles and autographs. He had a children's choire singing with him and they all got autographs - very cool.

When the door was open and they were loading equipment I saw Ryan Gosling walk by, he was looking right out at us and smiled as he chomped on some chewing gum.

Hotter than Hot!

A little while later the bouncer came out and shone a flashlight over to one side as a "distraction" meanwhile a car came up on the other side, the venue side door opened and Ryan ran out into the car and drove away.

Sad.

I mean, I have seen tons more fans at one time waiting for other "stars" and less of a crazy "attempted diversion" ha ha. Come on - a flashlight? ha ha!

Ah well, saw him once from inside, then saw him from the back as he left... it was a failed mission but better than nothing.
