Tennessean did an interview with PFach recently. Here's the story:

Peter Facinelli plays Carlisle Cullen, the father of the vampire clan around which the plot of the Twilight saga swirls. He's a veteran actor with a career stretching back over 15 years, and since taking on the Twilight role, he's embraced the fan community by releasing an iPhone app that "bites" your friends, altering their likenesses into vampire style, and staying in contact with followers through Twitter and online chats. He'll be at the convention this weekend to sign autographs and pose for photo ops, and he took a few moments to tell us what it's like living inside the Twilight storm.

What are these conventions like for you?

Whenever you have something in common and get together and share your excitement, it's a great thing. There are Q-and-As with the actors; you get to take pictures with them, get autographs, signatures with them. For me, it's a fun way to connect with the fans and just have a moment where they can ask questions.

I'm a fan of the books, and I actually enjoy getting together with other fans of the books. When I was a kid growing up, if I looked up to somebody, if I could have been sitting down with Paul Newman to talk about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, that would have been really exciting. I look at it the other way around now, being able to sit down with fans of the movies. I love to be able to give back, in that sense.

Is it intimidating, having to answer questions from such a well-informed fan base?

They're trying to get your take on how you approach the character. It's more along the lines of what they don't know: What were our favorite scenes to film, what it was like working with the directors. It's not so much quizzing for details, but filling in some of the gaps of the things they don't know.

When you're in between projects and you move on to other projects, you can forget some of the details, but while I'm shooting, I'm the foremost expert on the books and the fans. I'll go back and reread the books three or four times before we start the next one.

Why appear at these conventions?

The fan base has been like no other project that I've done. I have a sense of wanting to give back to that fan base because I feel like they've given so much to me. I've gone to these conventions and people will fly in from other states and from other countries. When you have a fan base that's that loyal, I like to give back.

Is it hard to protect your privacy these days?

It's a little more difficult when it comes to paparazzi. Sometimes you just want to take a bicycle ride down the street with your kids and there's a photographer there, and that's kind of invasive, but I've never felt invaded by the fans. I don't mind sharing information with them because I'm a family man and I have three kids. I've learned a lot along the way, and I think I can pass some of that along.

What projects are you working on right now?

I'm doing a show on Showtime called Nurse Jackie. We just finished the second season and it should be airing in March. I've optioned a script to the Hallmark Channel. . . . It's a romantic comedy that I wrote for my wife (actress Jennie Garth). I probably wouldn't be in it because I have other things going on, but I'd love to see her do it.

"I told my wife [Beverly Hills 90210 alum Jennie Garth] the only gift I want is to be able to be with my family," Peter Facinelli recently told iVillage while filming Nurse Jackie (the Showtime drama starring Edie Falco) in New York. "I wrap up the second season today, and I head home tomorrow. I'm looking forward to a break and just spending some time with my family."

It's no surprise that the dad of three looks forward to a little downtime with his loved ones in their L.A. home. In addition to his role as Dr. Fitch Cooper on Nurse Jackie, Facinelli also plays vampire Carlisle Cullen in the blockbuster Twilight films. Anticipating his holiday break, the 36-year-old took a moment to chat about a beloved Christmas tradition, New Moon fan requests and why he's in favor of a fifth Twilight movie.

Who would win in a fight between Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson?
In real life? Well I'd have to go Taylor all the way on that one, just because he's been taking karate since he was in his mother's womb. And I've seen him do some back flips and some high kicks. I think that Taylor would win the fight between him and me, too.

Alright, give us the scoop. Are Rob and Kristen Stewart dating?
You know, I don't know who my costars are dating, and I don’t ask. I mean, I don't know who Edie Falco is dating either.

Do you get tired of people asking you that?
Yeah, I get tired of people asking me who Edie Falco is dating all the time!

Twilight Lexicon had an interview last week with Peter Facinelli and he talked about his new iPhone app, Vampire Transformer. You can download it at the app store for just 99 cents.



Lori: So outside of your work with the iPhone apps and – oh my goodness, you’re humanitarian efforts with Alex’s Lemonade Stand – What other projects can we look forward to you getting involved in? You’re so busy already!

Peter: I don’t know. I take it one day at a time. Right now I’m looking forward to the holiday break. Next year there’s a couple of movies I’m looking at doing in the spring. There’s a movie that I wrote that I’m trying to get off the ground. I’d like to do a movie in the spring to early summer and then hopefully, you know, if we do Nurse Jackie III I’ll be back in the fall. And if we do Breaking Dawn I’ll be back in the fall/winter hopefully. Everything’s kind of up in the air with the end of Nurse Jackie III and Breaking Dawn. So that… I have to sit and wait. But right now I have a window between January and August that I can stuff. Right now I’m just seeing what I want to do.

Lori: Well awesome. We look forward to it. You mentioned that you kind of got involved with the iPhone apps because of twitter. What has been the biggest plus of being on twitter and the biggest drawback?

Peter: Wow. I can’t think of any drawbacks. I enjoy being on twitter. I enjoy connecting with the fans – hearing what the fans have to say. I enjoy being able to share information that I want to share. It used to be where you had something like the Vampire App or I’m doing a charity event I had to go to news papers and radio stations. Now I can reach a broad amount of people and tell them what I’m doing.

Laura: You can tweet it to the world and you don’t have to worry about being edited by anybody. You can get your message out there.

Peter: Exactly. So for me, I love having that in my hands and being able to have control over – cause a lot of times it’s true. You do an interview and what you said isn’t exactly what appears in the papers. It’s frustrating. So for me, I can voice whatever I need to voice and people know that I said it. There’s no denying it.

Laura: There you go! That’s great!

Lori: Or that you didn’t say something.

Peter: Or that I didn’t say something. I’ve actually used it for that. I know that my wife –

Lori: Or that your wife didn’t say something!

Peter: Yeah. Jennie got called out saying something that she never said and I had to go on Twitter and make sure that people knew that that wasn’t true. And actually by me going on Twitter Perez Hilton actually retracted his story because he found out what my wife did say. And that was validated, you know, so he retracted his story. It’s a good tool for me. I love being able to interact with the fans and hopefully my fans will come with me to my next project.

Lori: Ok – can we ask you some Twilight questions?

Peter: Sure.

Lori: I’ve wondered this for a while because your cast mates are pretty much close to you in age and yet you have to play the father figure. Now, you are a father in real life so it’s easy to tap into that father figure mode, I would imagine. But is it difficult to do it with several cast mates who are so close to you in age?

Peter: On set or off set?

Lori: On set.

Peter: They treat me like a friend or a big brother, but I wouldn’t say that I’m very parental towards them. But on camera everyone’s into their characters, so I buy into them being my children and they buy into me playing their father and there’s an established hierarchy in the family so everyone’s playing their parts. For me my daunting task when I was doing Twilight was how do I bring 350 years to the screen? So for me, what I did, I did a lot of research on Carlisle and where he was born and where those 350 years took him. So I researched his travels to Italy, the time periods, what was going on in those time periods, what wars were going on, what plagues he would have seen, what kind of entertainment was going on, the political status. So I had a long map because he had been so many places in 350 years. A lot of that informed me on who Carlisle was, and some of it actually ended up in the movie. There’s a whole thing in the baseball sequence where I raise my bat to center field. That was my homage to…

Laura: Babe Ruth?

Peter: Babe Ruth, yeah. And I had imagined while I was doing his travels that he ended up in Chicago. And baseball was big in the early 1900’s. He probably met Babe Ruth and probably went to see him play baseball. And so that was one of the reasons why he loved baseball so much and brought it to his family. By doing all that research, that little bit ended up in the movie.

Lori: I love that!

Peter: And then what I did – I worked on Carlisle, how he spoke and how he moved, because I felt like he came from a different time period. So even though it’s been watered down through the ages he should still have some reminisce of it. So I didn’t want him to have a full blown English accent since he’s been gone from England for so long, but I wanted him to have a very proper speech pattern and a very soft voice. Just in the way he moves. His movements are very small and he is a very a calming force. All that helped me build who Carlisle was and all that knowledge made me feel like I know more than everybody else. So I felt like that would help the audience see that I knew more, and so that’s how I brought 350 years to the screen.

Lori: That is amazing. Did you spend equal amount of time or any at all with other cast mates building back stories or back relationships – like with Elizabeth Reaser. Did you talk about the Carlisle/Esme relationship at all.

Peter: I don’t like to encroach on other people’s processes at all. Some of that would come out in rehearsal, but mostly I did my own homework on my relationship with Esme and why I thought that she was for me and what our relationship was. There were some discussions with Rob about out characters. I remember when we did Twilight I actually wrote him a letter in character from Carlisle to Edward basically explaining to him why the life he has is so superior than any other vampire’s life. Because I remember having conversations with Rob – you know Edward is this tortured character and he doesn’t understand why he lives this way – why aren’t we really being vampires. Because in the movies the nomads are the bad vampires, when in reality they’re just doing what vampires do.

Lori: Right.

Peter: We’re the odd birds that are actually doing something completely against our nature. So when these nomads come around they’re like, “What are you guys doing? We’re supposed to be feeding on humans here.”

Lori: Right.

Peter: It’s kind of like trying to domesticate a lion.

Lori and Laura: (laughing)

Peter: We’re like lions that are running around trying to be like house cats. And Rob, when I was talking with him, he was like, “I don’t understand why we’re living this way.” Basically having these in character conversations with me and, “Why did Carlisle change me?” So I felt obligated to explain myself and I’m better at it on paper. So I wrote him a letter saying why I thought – Because what he thought – he was looking at the Cullens like, “we’re weaker.” And I, as Carlisle, felt like, “No, we’re stronger than any other vampire.” Because in choosing not to do what they do there’s strength in that – because we have a choice. They have no choice, you know what I mean? They wouldn’t be able to stop. But the strength that it takes for us to stop makes us far superior than any of them.

Lori: Showing restraint.

Peter: Yeah, showing that restraint. And you know, it’s Carlisle’s way of trying to hold on to any humanity he can because he genuinely loves humans. I always felt what Carlisle was trying to create was a human that could live forever, as opposed to being a vampire.

Laura: That’s a great analogy.

Lori: Yes. And living the most normal, human-life life.

Peter: Right.

Lori: by having a home and a family.

Peter: Exactly. So if you can have that – if you can live this human-like life and you don’t feed on humans and you don’t live the vampire, nomadic way, then what you really are is a human who can live forever which is a fantastic thing. So I wrote this little letter and I gave it to Rob. So there are things when you’re building characters that you talk about in rehearsal. And like I said, a lot of that comes out of that and get put on screen. Like my scarves.

Laura: Oh that’s right! Like the building up of the scarves! Which actually I went looking for specifically in New Moon, because I had heard you mention before, that you had found that a part of the character. And I thought – oh look! It’s there!

Peter: What happened with the scarves, I went to Catherine and I said, “It’s not in the books, but I think Carlisle wears scarves.” Because I see him as this proper gentleman it feels right for him to wear these scarves. It’s something that he probably wore in the 1600’s or 1700’s and now he continues to wear them. It’s a part of who he is. But I also felt like it had a duel meaning, because if he had gotten bitten in the neck area then maybe he has some kind of phobia about having his neck exposed or that he doesn’t like having his neck exposed much. So that’s the whole history of the scarves.

Laura: That’s great motivation.

Lori: And then scarves end up being this great fashion accessory right now.

Peter: I know! It’s so weird! Everyone’s wearing scarves now!

Lori: You started a trend!

New Peter Facinelli Interview

I felt like I was in a dream—but I wasn’t. I really was talking to Peter Facinelli, aka Dr. Carlisle Cullen from the Twilight movies. Although the series’ fans are bloodthirsty with anticipation for the November 20 release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the 35-year-old actor—an avid Tweeter with over 1.2 million followers, and father to three daughters with 90210's Jennie Garth—seems as calm and cool as his signature vampire character. Currently in New York shooting the second season of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, Facinelli regularly commutes home to Los Angeles to visit his family. The strikingly handsome star took some time from his hectic coast-to-coast schedule to fill Time Out Kids in on his family, his career, his hometown (in Queens!) and, of course, the Cullens.


Will Twilight fans be surprised by New Moon?

I don’t know if they’ll be surprised; I’m hoping they’ll walk out of the theater happy. I was a fan of the book and am very pleased with how the movie came out. The Cullen family isn’t featured as prominently [as in the first film]. New Moon is focused more on the werewolf side of this small town. Also, Chris Weitz directed New Moon and his vision is different from [Twilight director] Catherine Hardwicke’s. It’s not the same as Twilight, but it still has its edge.

Was it challenging to play dad to a brood of actors so close to your own age?

When I first got cast I thought, I’m only about ten years older than these kids; how am I supposed to play their father? But I was more conscious of that on the first movie. Carlisle’s speech pattern and movements aren’t very contemporary, so it gives him more of a patriarchal feel.

Is the Facinelli household on Team Edward or Team Jacob?

When I asked my three-year-old what she liked about Twilight she said Edward.

How has Twilight changed you?

I've definitely got more people asking me to have a picture taken with them. The fan base is fantastic. They are very loyal and giving. Some people will fly in from other states just to come meet me.

Do you have a lot of moms as fans?

The fans span all ages. It’s not like more of the moms like me. They love the whole Cullen family.

How do you like living in New York?

It’s great! I grew up in Ozone Park, so it’s always nice to come back. I moved to L.A. in 1996 but I’ve shot a number of things here: The Big Kahuna with Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito, Riding in Cars with Boys and now Nurse Jackie.

What are your favorite things to do with your family in the city?

At Christmastime we like to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and go ice-skating in Central Park. The kids love to go shopping at FAO Schwarz, walk around the city and buy pretzels or hot nuts on the street corners.

Ever get back to Queens?

A couple months ago I went to Aldo’s Pizzeria where I used to go all the time. They sponsored my baseball team when I was a kid. Aldo is still working there on Cross Bay Boulevard and still makes one of the best pizzas in New York.

What was it like growing up in Ozone Park?

It was a real community. All the neighbors knew each other and watched out for one another. Fourth of July was huge. The streets would close down and fireworks would be lit off all the way down the block. I have a lot of good memories.

How do you balance family and work?

Any minute I have off, I try to get home. Last year I flew into L.A. on a Friday morning, picked up my kids from school, put up the Halloween decorations, had dinner with them and got back on a plane that night to go back to film. But it was worth every minute that I got to spend with them. I try not to go more than two weeks without seeing them even if it’s only for a day. And we also have Skype. At least we get to see each other! Sometimes we’ll even eat dinner together. I’ll be eating ramen noodles and they’ll be having a wonderful home-cooked meal.

As working actors, you and Jennie both have incredibly demanding schedules. What’s the key to your successful marriage?

We take it one day at a time. My theory: Don’t throw in the towel in a relationship if you’re having rocky times. You’re just going to have to start over with somebody else and then you’re going to have rocky times with them. Every time we’ve ridden through the rocky times, our love’s gotten deeper. At this point we’ve been together 15-odd years and I can't imagine trading that time for somebody else.

You and Jennie have three children, daughters Luca Bella, Lola Ray and Fiona Eve. Any plans for more?

I believe the world was made for a family of five and no more. When you get in a car, you can seat five comfortably. When you go out to dinner, you can seat five comfortably. I’m from a family of six but those were different days; everyone climbed in the back of a Chrysler and your face was smashed up against the glass and nobody cared. That being said, never say never!

What do you like to do during your downtime, besides Twitter?

What downtime? Any downtime I have is spent with my family, with my kids. In between one doing soccer and basketball, another doing horseback riding and the three-year-old wanting to go to the park, I don’t have a lot of downtime.

Is it true that you like to take family road trips?

Yes. We take our RV to our daughter’s soccer tournaments and we drove to Portland, Oregon this past summer. I just bought a new RV the other day. We had a 33-foot and now we’ve moved up to a huge 40-foot Class A motor home. Who knows? Maybe I’m making room for one more child.

What’s up next for you, aside from the Twilight series?

I’m filming Nurse Jackie through December. There’s the possibility of a fourth Twilight [film]. I’ve written three scripts and hopefully they’ll eventually get set up.

Of all the characters you’ve played, do you have a favorite?

That’s like asking me to pick a favorite kid! Every one of my characters is my creation. I’ve liked them all. Dr. Cullen is a great character, but so is Dr. Cooper [from Nurse Jackie]. I love playing them both.

I really like it, I think it's more her and I also am excited for her role as Joan Jett - I feel like this is more her "style" (ya cuz, you know, Kristen and I are BFFs and I know soooo much about her LOL)

But just from my impression of her - this seems a lil more indie, off-beat, Kstew Style....

Q. How is it back on set?
A. It’s good. I’m really excited to be back with the whole team again and our new director, Chris Weitz. It’s been a lot of fun so far and the movie’s looking great, so I couldn’t ask for more.

Q. And you have a huge role this time…
A. It’s a little bit bigger, yeah! It’s exciting because I’m excited to bring alive the new Jacob Black for the fans.

Q. You look like an '80s rock star with your long hair!
A. Sometimes I look in the mirror and I don’t recognize myself. It’s an actual wig. It’s glued to my head in the front and it gets itchy sometimes. You can see the lace if you look close, but it doesn’t come across on camera. It gives me a totally different look. I don’t even look like myself. But it’s fun.

Q. The biggest change is in your body though. You gained 30 pounds of muscle for this role, is that right?
A. I did, yeah. When I was filming Twilight, I knew where my character was going in the rest of the series, so obviously I knew I had some work ahead of me! So as soon as I stopped filming Twilight, I got back home, hit the gym and worked very, very hard, and here I am filming New Moon, 30 pounds heavier.

Q. And doing your own stunts.
A. So far. Let’s not jinx it, but basically you get an evaluation at the beginning of filming. They took me to a gymnasium to see what I could do. They put me on some dirt bikes to see how well I can do. I think they’re just figuring out how much they’re actually going to allow me to do. So far, I’ve been able to do everything, so I’m hoping that doesn’t change too much, 'cause the stunts are a lot of fun.

Q. Did you have a trainer?
A. Yes, I did have a trainer that I used the whole time and I owe him a lot of thanks!

Q. What is the biggest challenge this time around?
A. It’s actually the same biggest challenge we had for the first one and it’s the weather. It’s really funny because I think the Twilight saga is the only movies where we have to stop filming when the sun comes out. So whenever it’s sunny, we have to either go to an interior shot or just stop filming.

Q. What’s your most exciting scene in New Moon?
A. It’s so hard to choose. Like I said, I really enjoy the stunts so I had a lot of fun doing the dirt bike sequences. I got to hop on the bike and go really fast and come to a skidding stop. It’s really cool. And I also like a lot of the more serious scenes, the pivotal scenes in the movie, like Jacob and Bella’s breakup scene, which is the first time Bella sees Jacob after he has transformed into a wolf. And it’s really emotional. I felt bad for Jacob just reading the books, but now that I’m actually living this character, I feel so bad for the guy! It’s really sad.

Q. What is a typical day on the set for you?
A. I have very early wake-up calls. I’m usually waking up at 4:30 or 5, and we don’t usually finish until about 5 or 6 at night. But we usually go out after, just explore the restaurants in town. It’s been a lot of fun so far.

Q. What about actresses?
A. It changed a lot. It used to be Jessica Alba for the longest time, and I’m kind of transferring to Megan Fox.

Q. All the hot babes!
A. Yeah, yeah, yeah! (Laughs)

Q. Aren’t you involved in some sort of hip-hop performance art show?
A. No! That’s on some of my biographies. I need to get that off because I did it when I was 10 years old and I did it for about six months and I was done with it. And I can’t dance at all, so I need to clear that up!

I never really said this before, although I thought it, but it is because I didn't know enough about her... but just seeing her at MTV and in interviews, I mean, she is just nuts.... and honestly, how good was Twilight Movie compared to book? how about compared to even New Moon's Trailor?

Michael Welch says that–

“We have a new director, Chris Weitz. (He) was amazing. It’s interesting because between him and Catherine, they’re so different. Catherine is somebody who can only function at a cluttered desk. She needs chaos to success. That’s wonderful. Chris is the exact opposite. Just couldn’t be more cool, clam and collected and had his stuff together. It’s the people at the top that affect everyone below them — so the energy was more calm.”

Peter Facinelli agrees, stating that–

Catherine (Hardwicke) is a ball of energy and infuses passions when she comes on the set. Chris is more laid back, insightful and thought provoking. It’s completely different. It’s like two different rollercoaster rides, but you still love the rides. They’re fantastic.”

Q. How is it working with Chris Weitz?
A. Chris is amazing. He’s extremely talented and he’s done a lot of amazing work. Everything is looking fantastic so far for this and I know it’s gong to continue to. But at the same time, the set is so calm and relaxed and we’re just having a really great time. Sometimes you wonder, “How is he doing this? How is he creating this beautiful work and we’re just all having a blast doing it?” Chris has definitely taken control and he’s a blast to be around.

In today's post by Metro with an interview with Chris Weitz he says -

Q. “Twilight”, the first installment of the series, received some criticism for not being 100 per cent true to the book. Are you addressing some of these issues?

A. It’s impossible to be completely faithful to every single page of a book because movies don’t have enough time. So you end up cutting things and combining things. But I would say that we’re definitely using the book as our bible. My take on this film is the film is the book and Stephanie Mayer is my main resource for everything in this. I’m constantly checking with her to see if it’s something a character would do or a detail is right. You can never absolutely please everybody but my main intention is to satisfy the fans of the book.

Q. You’re a very visual director. What’s your vision for New Moon?

A. We’ve got an amazing visual effects team. The whole idea is to use the full palette of colors, to have our shadows be very dark and to have our colours be very rich so that we can experience the full range of emotional texture. The idea is that this will look like a Victorian narrative painting in a way, with those medieval jewel-like colours as well as very glossy deep blacks, and for the composition of the frames to be classical. In some ways, this is going to be a rather old-fashioned film. There are elements that incorporate the latest technology and there are things that are very dynamic in the action scenes. But it’s more Dr. Zhivago than Iron Man.

Q. Could you tell us about New Moon and how it’s different from Twilight?

A. I think we get an opportunity to sort of expand our scope -- from the confines of the forest to Italy. Your sense of mythology of this world is deepened so that the story that underlies what was going on in the first movie becomes more and more clear. And there are a lot of secrets that were set up in the first book and the first movie that come to light in the second movie. So there are a lot of surprises in store.
