Angelina Jolie to play Maleficent in Tim Burton's Sleeping Beauty?

I saw a tweet between @nucksgrl and @LittleLauren about the possibility of Angelina Jolie playing Maleficent in Tim Burton's rumoured flick based on the evil character from the classic tale of "Sleeping Beauty"

Here's what I found:
Two months ago, AICN reported that director Tim Burton (Alice in Wonderland) was planning to develop "Maleficent," another live-action/CG feature film, this time based on the classic "Sleeping Beauty" fairy tale.

THR has now confirmed the news, adding that Linda Woolverton (Alice in Wonderland) will be writing the script. Disney has yet to make an official deal with Burton, as it considers hiring Woolverton the first step in a long process.

The plan is not to just re-tell the same story; the new movie will instead focus on the villainous Maleficent, who curses the infant Princess Aurora to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday after not being invited to the baby's christening.

She is often viewed as the most powerful and sinister of the Disney Villains, frequently acting as their leader in many crossovers.

Furthermore, regarding Jolie's involvement:

Angelina Jolie could soon play a famous villain on the big screen.

The actress, 34, is in talks to assume the role of Maleficent, the wicked fairy godmother, in a live-action remake of Sleeping Beauty to be directed by Tim Burton, the Los Angeles Times reports.

In the original animated flick, Maleficent cast a spell on Sleeping Beauty that caused her to prick her finger and sleep for 100 years, awaking only after getting kissed by a prince.

Disney declined to comment, and Jolie's manager could not be reached by comment by the Times.

Jolie is currently filming The Tourist alongside Johnny Depp in Venice, Italy. Her next kid-friendly flick, Kung Fu Panda 2, hits theaters in June 2011.

Mandy's Mind - The first flick I saw in theatre was Disney's Sleeping Beauty. I think Jolie would make a wonderful Maleficent and Tim Burton did a great job with Alice, i would love to see him make a dark version of Sleeping Beauty focussing on Maleficent.

I love those kinds of stories...

I am a huge fan of Gregory Maguire, an authour who takes classic stories and manipulates them exposing various social and political aspects within them. He wrote "Wicked" and "Confessions of an Ugly Step Sister" and "Mirror Mirror"

What are your thoughts on Tim Burton making this film? and Jolie as the lead? Time will tell how it all comes together!
