What a great location to film a vampire movie... "Blood Alley"
Just the name is fitting enough, but it's history is even more interesting...
Blood Alley is fairly stereotypical of a Gastown alley - there's brickwork lining half of the alley and nearby buildings; there are ornate aged lamps and railings clustered together at it's entrance; and there are homeless Vancouverites huddled together out of the rain. What makes Blood Alley famous is not it's aesthetic appeal, but that it is home to perhaps the largest amount of rumours, myths, tall tales, and outright fabrications in Vancouver history.
There are numerous stories about Blood Alley, many, of course, can't be proven, but are still fun, scary lil' urban legends and rumours passed on from generation to generation...
One rumour is that it got its name from unsuspecting ship-workers of the Granville town site who would walk through the alley after pay-day only to get murdered if they didn't surrender their cash.
Another rumour is that Blood Alley was the location for a number of butcher shops. At the end of each day they would be rinsed out resulting in the inevitable blood in the street.
Furthermore, they apparently used to hold public executions in blood alley square as Gaelor's Mews (right next to Blood Alley) was the Location of Vancouver's first jail.
The brick works are the original materials.... how creepy?
Here is a photo of a local restaurant. It is located in "Blood Alley" where they filmed Thursday overnight with the rain machines.
Complete details on what was filmed and who was there later today.
I just wanted to share with everyone a piece of Vancouver history and commend David Slade and the entire production team particularly the location scouts on discovering and using a location so amazingly rich in beauty and history. What a visually stimulating scene this will be, not just for it's content but it's location.
